“I am tired of the bad press! Drinking black coffee makes you a psychopath!” The coffee lamented.
“Well, caffeine is definitely not something to write home about!” This came from the turmeric, mighty chuffed at being touted as a ‘super food’ with anti-inflammation properties.
The Taj tea sighed, remembering the number the times it had to reinvent itself to remain relevant. Gone were the days when tea meant just Chai…with milk and liberal sprinkling of sugar. There was this green-tea wave that relegated it to the background. From wah Taj, it went to woe Taj! Then there were the lavender, chamomile, Oolong, Tulsi , Herbal, Macha , white tea and a dozen others before he was brought to the forefront, now consumed without milk..so technically black!
The sugar beside the tea said testily, “Tell me about it! All things white is bad. I am tired of these food experts who change their opinion faster than the weathermen!”
“Well, what else can you expect from these capricious humans?” the wise old wheat flour wheezed smiling at the sad little white rice. After fighting the Quinoa, Millets, Buckwheat of the world, they were getting a fresh lease because their best friend, the celebrity nutritionist Rijuta Diwekar, kept speaking about going back to one’s roots and was touting the goodness of dal, Chawal at night after the world and its wife came down heavily on both of them for inducing diabetes, weight-gain and multitude of sins.
The potatoes in the corner were silent. They realized early-on, the Kale, broccoli, Brussels of the world, could never match upto their taste and hence, now and then they were found themselves in the forefront, when the taste buds went on strike.
As the discussion raged in the kitchen, the brat of the house screamed, ” I want Pizza!”
The turmeric, too, had the grace to blush.

Competition is the way of life. Most of us have to reinvent ourselves. Tea, spices and condiments no different. At the end if the day, client must be happy. Alas! leaving aside beautiful partner, our mind seeks pleasure somewhere else, outside.
This is such a fun and witty take on the constant battle of food trends. I couldn’t stop smiling while reading this—it’s so relatable
You’re a whizz with humour writing, Chandrika. Absolute laugh riot, not to mention so visual. I could easily imagine all the expressions of the poor grains and cereals. And yeah, potato is always the winner, perhaps a close second to pizza!
Thank you kind Ma’am. Potato is the king..err Queen:) One up on Pizza in my humble opinion
This was such a fun and creative read! I loved how each ingredient had its own quirky personality, it made me chuckle! The ending with the brat demanding pizza was just perfect. Great work!
Thank you so much Neha. I enjoyed penning this down and am glad it resonated with you
Poor teas and coffees have to compete with newfound crazes, but hey, nothing can beat an adrak wali chai. I believe in going back to our roots too so bring on those traditional foods anyday!
Tell me about that! I can’t live without my regular chai. To hell with weightloss funda.
A story revolving food and other ingredients of the Kitchen sets the base of true humour. I love stories which offers a spike of humour for the readers. In todays world humour is the only thing that can keep us alive even in the weirdest moments of life and you gifted us this humour which added smile on my face… Am I not looking good wearing that smile on face ? :)
You are..You are. I can feel the radiant smile to here:) Thank you for the read and kind words
Lol, the line “food experts who change their opinion faster than the weathermen” made me guffaw. Really these food stuffs must be so confused with humans and their ever changing food preferences. Aloo hi best hai sach mein !
Haha…Wah taj to Woe Taj, true. And the ending is the best!
Good old days when tea was cherished with liberal quantity of milk and sugar with a side of sweet biscuits..Love the witty perspective.
How much your right brain should have worked to appreciate potatoes and turmeric and let them blush. Cute and creative
I loved reading this as I get to imagine how life was in the old days in your part of the world. Reading this made me want tea and biscuit as well..haha
